A listing of some of my favourite vintage and second-hand traders. I’ll keep updating it.
Asia Gallery and Vintage Favric Emporium, Maurice St Penrose – You’ll find handmade kimonos of silk, cotton and wool. It is a treasure trove of colour, fine fabric, beautiful objects and furniture and the smell of beautiful fragrant furniture oil. Asia Gallery once was a Wellington institution, but moved to Auckland just over a year ago to consolidate their warehouse and shop. It’s a great place to spend a Saturday browsing through the many racks of colour. Asia Gallery import vintage fabrics, kimono, furniture and objects from Kyoto. You’ll find beautiful silk kimono made with shiburi techniques. My favourite amongst the racks are the vintage jackets that are over 100 years old.
St Kevin’s Arcade and K Road – a great place to browse for a piece for that next event. The more boutique vintage Vixen in St Kevin’s is a carefully curated place to find your Levi 501 cut-off, a fur, 80s glamour girl dress or a great little accessory to really make your outfit pop. The less expensive Paperbag Princess, Cheap as Chips and the Red Cross Store are worth browsing if you have the time.
Salvation Army, Dominion Rd, Mt Eden – small little second hands hop selling clothing, housewares and furniture
Savemart Onehunga and New Lynn – These warehouses are full of secondhand clothes. Take your time and you’re bound to find a darling piece amongst the mass of clothing racks.
Ziggurat, Cuba St – This carefully curated boutique is a favourite when I visit Wellington. Expect to pay boutique prices. But it’s well worth it for that statement piece that really makes your outfit pop. Every piece I’ve bought from here has become a fave.
Vintage Garage, Smith St, Collingwood – I literally got lost amongst the racks here. I fell for a stunning cream and gold American 60s shift dress. And laughed out loud at a ridiculous pair of old English plaid boots. The items are beautiful and high quality. Even if you walk out empty handed you’re curiosity will have been awakened by this well presented boutique.
Sacred Heart Opportunity Shop, 87 Grey Street, St Kilda – A sweet old school op-shop in an old church. The store has some great little finds in clothing, accessories and homeware. Give yourself some time to delve through the racks and you may just find a designer piece.
